A heavy duty, long-throw 3-inch drive unit is allied to a multi-stage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the speaker output over half-octave increments. Instead of a standard integrated circuit, the Model One uses a state of the art, discrete-component FM tuner featuring GaAs MES-FET mixers, originally developed for cellular telephones, allowing better FM reception and increased clarity on closely spaced stationsThe Model One was the first radio to adopt this technology. Discovering stations is a joy due to the oversize tuning dial with a geared-down 5:1 ratio. An amber tuning indicator illuminates to assist accurate tuning. Built-in AM and FM antennas provide good reception in most cases, but a 75 ohm connection on the rear panel allows an external FM antenna to be utilised in difficult reception areas. Also provided is a headphone socket, auxiliary input to connect a portable CD player or other device, and an auxiliary output for recording.
